Mazzallakkar Fort
In the Mulini area, so called for the existence of diverse mills that use the waters from the Rincione stream, lie the remains of a fort built by the Arabs and called Mazzallakkar. Its construction dates back to the same period in which the Arabs founded Zabut (Sambuca), in around the year 830. The fort has a quadrangular form; a large circular tower rises up in each corner covered by a small limestone dome, with a pointed ornament that was meant to be a flame or a half-moon. Although used as an animal shelter, the fort remained in great condition until the 1950’s. Following the construction of the Carboj dam it was however partially submersed in the waters of the river Arancio for almost six months a year, a situation which obviously threatens to irremediably compromise the structure.
