Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Sambuca di Sicilia (AG)
The Baroque style church of Saint Catherine, which makes up part of the homonym former Benedictine monastery, has a single nave divided by four small marble altars, with the main altar situated in the large chapel. In the seventeenth century it was adorned with stuccoes by the artist Vincenzo Messina from Palermo. The statues that represent the four embodied Virtues placed at the sides of the first two altars of the nave are of great value. Also noteworthy are the statues of San Mauro and San Placido, cofounders of the Benedictine order, and the Eternal Father that bursts into the presbytery from above, according to the traditional decorative structure. Among the works that enrich the church there is a large altarpiece by Brother Felix of Sambuca that depicts the glorification of the Marquis Don Pietro Beccadelli, who provided and enhanced the monastery and the church with an income and works of art.
