Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III has been the heart of Menfi since its foundation in the seventeenth century. Via Garibaldi, which leads to Pignatelli Palace and was once the main road of the town, creates that chessboard map structure typical of the seventeenth century, as a result of its numerous crossroads. The road extends all the way to the city borders defined by four chapels dedicated to Our Lady. Parallel to via Garibaldi runs Via della Vittora, formerly via Popolo, that was built at the beginning of the eighteen hundreds as a result of the demographic growth. The 1968 earthquake demolished the square’s two most important buildings: the Tower, erected in the XIII century by Fredrick II of Swabia and the Mother Church, constructed between the XVII and the XVIII centuries. Both have however been rebuilt.
