PIgnatelli Palace
Palace
Menfi (AG)
Pignatelli Palace lies on the site previously occupied
by the Castle of Fredrick II of Swabia in the XIII century. It dates back to
1638, the year in which Diego Aragona Tagliavia founded the new urban centre of
Menfi. It spreads out over two floors with twelve vaulted rooms. The large main
entrance leads into an internal courtyard from which, by way of a magnificent
marble staircase, you can access the main floor. At the end of the feudal age
it became the seat of the town council, then the Magistrates Court, a school
and lastly a very popular central bar. During archaeological excavations
carried out recently a Necropolis dating back to 330-400 AC was discovered
right underneath the Palace floor. In the same area various fragments of pottery
from the XIII century linked to the medieval settlement of Burgimilluso were
also found.
