Contemporary Art after the Earthquake
Following the terrible earthquake that devastated the Valley of Belìce in 1968 some contemporary artists in Menfi set about making pieces that symbolize the rebirth of the city after the catastrophe.
The “Porta del Sole” (the Sun Gate), at Menfi’s north entrance, was designed by the architect Vincenzo Calandra “with an image of dawn in mind whose perspective symbolises the beginning of the new Menfi”.
The Pergolati Gardens of Inycon, in the new urban centre of Menfi, represent a synthesis between the historic city and the new city. They also host temporary exhibitions and wine-inspired tastings.
The church of Our Lady of Succour, built on the former Church, was designed by the architect Anotonino Palmeri from Menfi. Inside it preserves the precious nineteenth century simulacrum of Our Lady of Succour, which belonged to the old church.
