Church of the Purgatory
Churches
Menfi (AG)
The church, originally dedicated to Saint Anthony the
Abbot, dates back to between
1739-1769. In 1947 it was dedicated to
Our Lady of Consolation, whose nineteenth century wooden statue is kept above
the main altar. It is also known as the Church of the Purgatory after both the
name of the road it overlooks, formerly “Road of the Purgatory”, now via
Cavour, and the ancient painting depicting the Souls of Purgatory that was
preserved behind the altar until its disappearance. A series of paintings,
which represent the Nativity, the Passion and the Resurrection of Jesus, by the
contemporary painter Gianbecchina, are of great artistic importance.
