Church of the Purgatory

The Church of the Purgatory was almost certainly constructed by a confraternity in the second half of the seventeenth century. The neo-classic style structure, with barrelled vaults, is a single nave with a semi-circular apse. As a result of the 1968 earthquake the church suffered serious damages and for public safety the upper part of the façade and the bell-tower, which housed a spectacular clock, were knocked down. In the nineteen nineties it was subjected to restoration projects that brought back the ancient features. It is composed of a main altar and four side altars. For more than thirty years it was the parish church, during a period in which the Mother Church remained closed due to the collapse of its roof. Currently the church is not used for worship.
