Mother Church of the Holy Spirit
Churches
Cattolica Eraclea (AG)
The church, founded in 1745, is one of the most
important baroque monuments of all the dioceses. Two arms extend from the
single nave and connect in the centre via a dome. The vaults are barrelled and
those of the central nave are adorned by stuccos with floral motifs. Frames
that define large ashlars decorate the dome. The apse contains a niche under a
concentric arch, different to the one that surrounds the altar, while below the
wall arches precious marble altars are placed. A collection of overlapping
arches and elegant columns frame the magnificent portal. The noteworthy bell
tower, built at a later date, ends in a steeple, is covered in yellow and green
majolica in the form of geometric motifs and was made using local “Barancino”
stone.
