Church of the Itria
Churches
Caltabellotta (AG)
The Church of the Itria rises up in the heart of the
historic centre and was built between the end of the sixteenth century and the
first half of the seventeenth century. It was originally dedicated to the Souls
in Purgatory, demonstrated by the iconography of the stone medallion placed
above the entrance portal. Its exterior is somewhat imposing with a pointed
façade that dominates the small space in front of it. The portal is exquisite
with four Corinthian twisted columns above which an architrave dominated by a
spiral gable rests, characterised by a cartouche in the centre portraying a
soul in purgatory and a seraph. The paintings on the circular cloth of the apse
and the vault that depict the apostles are remarkable. Also worth noting are
the stuccoes carried out by Bernardo Sesta, who died following a fall from the
scaffolding precisely during their completion in 1885.
