Church of the Pietà

Caltabellotta (AG)
The Church of the Pietà rises up from its splendid panoramic position in the higher part of the historic centre, nestled between the rocks of Mount Kratas. It is one of the most ancient places of Christian worship still present in this region, most likely dating back to the Byzantine era, and is accessed by a stairway carved into the rock. The small church is made up of two very distinct parts: the older part is rock while the modern external part is characterised by its classic double-sloped roof and a little seventeenth century bell-tower. Over the centuries the structure has undergone diverse modifications; until the mid-nineteenth century it was enriched by a gothic-style door and had a vestibule. Today the entrance is characterised by a door with arched lintels in square stone ashlars topped by an octagonal window.
