Monastery of Saint Pellegrino
Monastery
Caltabellotta (AG)
The Saint Pellegrino monastery was built where legend has it the saint, Bishop of Triocala, defeated the dragon. It lies on Norman foundations, built on the remains of an Arab fortress and was enlarged in the eighteenth century. The Baroque façade on the adjacent church (1721) is noteworthy, as are the eighteenth century wooden statue of Saint Pellegrino and a marble statue, which dates back to 1755. The hermitage, built in the seventeenth century, and the little church are both located in the upper-most part of the mountain. The small church has a beautiful Baroque style portal. Passing through the atrium, which is on the left hand side of the church, you can access two deep caves linked with the Saint’s cult, most likely his original dwelling.
