Church of Salvatore
Churches
Caltabellotta (AG)
The church was originally located within the city walls, but today is on the periphery of the current city centre. It has a basilica plan with a single nave and a rectangular base, the walls contain uneven stone inserts and the roof is double-sloped.
The original main portal is still visible today and faces the west, as was tradition. Later, during one of the many modifications the building went through in the centuries, a precious Chiaramonti-style portal was added along the southern façade.
The inside was refurbished in the Baroque period and the only remnant from the original Norman church is an octagonal holy water basin resting on a granite column and little else.
Three processional statues are kept inside the church, the statue of Easter, of the Resurrected Christ, and the Madonna with Saint Michael the Archangel.
