Caltabellotta (AG)
The archaeological route of Caltabellotta comprises a visit to the Sican Necropolises, the Saint Cono Caves, the excavation site in the Gulea area and finally to the sacrificial altar for the God Kronos.
The Sican Necropolises with their 22 prehistoric burial chambers are located at the far-east and far-west of the city.
The Saint Cono Caves make up a complex inhabited since the Sican period, which is surrounded by a myriad of burial chambers.
The archaeological findings in the Gulea area date back to approximately the sixth century BC. Further south, in the San Benedetto district, identified as the ancient site of Triòcala (a name that according to Diodoro Siculo refers to a city that possesses three beautiful things – tria kala – namely springs, fertilised land that produces above all wine and oil and the unstoppable being), the excavation campaign has brought to light traces of a cave-like structure that may be interpreted as a sacred Punic construction.
The sacrificial altar for the God Kronos has a double staircase and was used during the Greco-Roman era.
