Church of Holy Maria Annunziata (Abbey)
Churches
Castelvetrano (TP)
The modern church has been developed with an orthogonal axis compared to that of the former building. It has an irregular form and is accessible through two entrances: one that opens onto Via XX Settembre while the other more impressive doorway corresponds to the old restored entrance. It was built in reinforced concrete with a wooden roof. It incorporates the ruins of the previous sanctuary, from which it uses the surviving angles as well as the Baptismal font. The painting depicting Saint Francis of Paolo surrounded by his life events, dated 1560, was taken from the Annunziata and is preserved in the Bishop of Mazara del Vallo’s studio. The triptych that represents the coronation of the Virgin between Saints Gandolfo and George, painted in 1448 and originating from this church, is stored in the Abatellis Palace in Palermo. It constitutes the absolute most ancient pictorial work from Castelvetrano in memory.
