Villa of "The Leopard"
Natural area
Santa Margherita di Belice (AG)
One of the places linked to the famous novel “The Leopard” is the garden located below the Filangeri di Cutò palace. It was created at the end of the XVII century and occupies an area of around 4,100 sq. m. Inside there are four fountains, two in the shape of a four-leaf clover, one large in a circular form with a plant filled islet in the centre, and one small and rectangular, defined by the “bamboos” that stand near it. There is also a green house and an aviary. Below the foundations of the land there is an underground water canal that allowed for its preservation even during the period of total abandon at the beginning of the XX century. The Department of Botanical Science at the University of Palermo has identified 86 different plant types in the garden, 15 of which are rare species.
