Clock Tower
Monuments
Siculiana (AG)
An original structure was built in the XVII century, with the authorisation of the Baron Blasco Isfar, as a church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary that remained in use until 1859. From its ruins the structures of the Casa del Fascio and the Clock tower, today seat of the city council, were built. The mechanical clock situated at the top of the tower was constructed in 1887 and carries the signature of Vincenzo Scibetta of Bisacquino. Its structure consists of a mechanism moved by the traction of weights. It functions through the continuous transformation of movement, guaranteed by the gravity created by the weights. When recharging, the weights are brought back to their initial position. It is a fascinating example of human genius. Today the tower is also used as an exhibition space.
