Poggioreale

Trapani

Poggioreale was founded at the foot of Mount Castellaccio in 1642 at the wishes of Franncesco Marchisio Morso, marquise of Gibellina and from 1643 also prince of Poggioreale. In 1968 the town was destroyed by the earthquake that forced the inhabitants to abandon it. The new centre was rebuilt in the seventies around 4 km further down the valley.
The main attraction is still the old centre, which today is defined as “Ghost City” and has been chosen by many directors as a location for their films. Today it is still possible to see its ancient urban chessboard features.
