Elimo Square
Town Center
Poggioreale (TP)
The ancient Elimo Square was the main hub of the town. Ten roads led off from the rectangular space, which was overlooked to the north by the stairway that led to the Mother Church. Work of the celebrated architect Paolo Portoghesi, also creator of the Mosques in Rome and Strasbourg and the Royal Palaces in Jordan and Amman, Elimo square was built in 1988. It was inspired by the ancient Greek agorà , the main town square and meeting place for the people. The imposing structure strikes the visitor with artistically worked columns, enriched by two caryatids on the left side and two on the superior colonnade, carried out by the Florentine sculptor Paolo Borghi. The harmonious and stylistically seductive movements immerse the tourist for a moment in the heart of ancient Greek civilization.
