Partanna

Trapani

The first urban centre of the city was established around the Castle in the Early Middle Ages. Following that, the original centre was abandoned and the city developed around the new Mother Church. Since the eleventh century the history of the feudal territory has been linked to the rich and important Sicilian family of Grifeo, who had continual rule over Partanna until the twenty-first century. Many religious orders established themselves in the area, from the Franciscans, at the end of the fifteenth century, to the Carmelites, the Augustinians and the Benedictines that arrived during the seventeenth century. Severely damaged by the 1968 earthquake, the historic centre has almost entirely been rebuilt.
