The countryside around Menfi offers the largest production of artichoke cultivation in all of Sicily: over 600 hectares of land, of which only 10 are reserved for the traditional “Spinoso di Menfi”, a particular thorny variety which is only available in the local markets and those of Palermo, Agrigento and Trapani. The “Spinoso” contains high levels of lignin and functional molecules, which is why in the past it was most commonly used as a medicinal plant.
