Buccellato

Local Food Product

The Buccellato is a traditional Sicilian sweet, whose name derives from the Late Latin word buccellatum, meaning “nibble”. The ingredients and the preparation are very similar to the “Purciddati”. Short crust pastry dough is rolled out and stuffed with dried figs, raisins, almonds, orange zest and/or other ingredients that vary depending on where it is prepared. After being stuffed it is closed and shaped in various ways, often in a donut shape, and then usually glazed. Baked in the oven, it keeps well for long periods and is eaten over the Christmas season.
