Minni di Virgini
Local Food Product
The Minni di Virgini, literally “virgin breasts”, date back to the eighteenth century. They were invented by a nun, Sister Virginia Casale of Rocca Menna of the College of Maria, who prepared them for the first time in celebration of the marriage of a young local Marquis. Naturally, in giving them this particular shape, the nun was not inspired by the features of the female body but by the hills of the Anguillara, Castellaccio and Minulazza valleys that she could see from the window in her cell. It was in this way that this particular sweet was brought about, in the form of a hill, filled with ricotta cream, chocolate and little pieces of “zuccata” (candied squash), then covered with a sugar glaze and finally decorated with a candied cherry placed on the centre of each hill. The new creation was greatly appreciated by the wedding diners.
