Mount Suso
Archaeological areas
Montallegro (AG)
The first inhabited area of Montallegro appeared at the end of the sixteenth century on Mount Suso, also known as Cicaldo and called “Monslaetus” in Latin. The hill does however show traces of older settlements. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the area was abandoned due to the growing difficulty of water supply and the inhabitants moved to the lowlands, so founding the current town of Montallegro. The ruins of Mount Suso are the only Sicilian example of a sixteenth century village in which the urban structures, the religious and civil buildings and the various types of housing units are still clearly identifiable.
