Church of Our Lady of Graces

Montevago (AG)
The origins of the Church of Our Lady of Graces derive from the accidental discovery, in the open countryside, of an image of Holy Mary, painted on a rock. The painting was immediately placed on two oxen and carried away, followed by many people. At a certain point the animals stopped and despite much incitement it was impossible to make them continue. The news inspired the people to build a church on that exact site. This was completed in around the year 1777. There were five altars, the largest of which accommodated the image of the Holy Mary painted on rock. On the side altars there were painted canvases, a statue of Our Lady of Graces and a small papier-mâché statue of Saint Joseph. In the XIX century the church was adorned with stuccoes and a convent was built alongside it. The worship of Our Lady of Graces is celebrated every year on the 2nd of July.
