Bonsignore Village
Bonsignore Village, Santu Petru in Sicilian, owes its name to Antonio Bonsignore captain of the military police who fell in battle in 1936 during the Italian colonial war in Africa. It was inaugurated in December 1940 by the national authorities for the colonisation of the estate. It lies on the plan of the former feud of Santo Pietro Sottano, in a charming position only 13 km away from the city. The area is celebrated for its numerous beaches such as Lido Fungitella, Pietre Cadite and the area of the Foce del Fiume Platani Nature Reserve. In the summer it stages a series of outdoor shows that take place in the village main square. Over the last ten days of August, the celebrations in honour of the Patron, Saint Peter, are held and comprise a procession followed by a fireworks display and by the traditional “rigatonata”.
