Anguilla Necropolis
Archaeological areas
Ribera (AG)
The necropolis was discovered in 1982 in the Magone-Anuilla-Casino district around two km south of the centre of Ribera. The tombs date between the Middle Bronze Age and the beginning of the late Bronze Age (XIII century BC). There are two distinct types, “artificial caves” and “rooms”. The latter are more elaborate as they are preceded by a dromos, an access corridor of various length and a width of about 80 cm, which leads to a trapezoidal or rectangular formed vestibule that precedes the true burial chamber. This is formed of one or two chambers with domed ceilings that slope towards the centre (tholos). The deceased was laid down on a step around 40 cm high and various votive objects were placed in front of him such as vases, jewellery, weapons and utensils.
