Mount Adranone Archaeological Area
The Mount Adranone archaeological site lies at around 1,000 metres above sea level and 7 km north of the centre of Sambuca. Ancient Adranon was colonised by Selinunte in the VI century BC and conquered by Carthage in the IV century BC. In 250 BC it was destroyed by Rome. Today it preserves, intact, the various areas of an ancient city: the necropolis in which the so called “Queen’s Tomb” stands out; the farm used as an artisanal space; the inhabited centre where it is possible to admire the remains of houses, holy areas, storehouses, workshops, cisterns and, on the summit of the mount, the acropolis from which rises the sanctuary. A powerful wall, about 15 km long, defines the perimeters of the city.
