Mouth of the Platani River Nature Reserve
Natural area
Ribera (AG)
The Foce del Fiume Platani River Nature Reserve covers the mouth of the river Platani and a part of Borgo Bonsignore. It features low dunes, various shrub species and conspicuous Mediterranean vegetation marked by eucalyptus, acacia and pine trees. The reserve, that extends over 200 hectares of land, was established in 1984 in order to protect the particular coastal ecosystem and many bird species such as the grey heron, yellow-legged gull, purple heron and the western marsh harrier. It is also home to the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. The landscape is completed by the imposing cliff of Capo Bianco, that drops steeply down to the sea, at the summit of which is located the Eraclea Mino acropolis.
