Poggio Diana Castle
Castle
Ribera (AG)
The fortress dates back to Norman times (XVII century). It was later used by the Saracens who called it “Misilcassino”, meaning “place of descent on horseback”. The current name dates back to the XV century and refers to the noblewoman Diana Moncada, daughter of the Prince of Paternò Luigi Guglielmo Moncada and wife of Vincenzo Luna, one of the castle owners.
Today only a part of the perimeter walls and two towers remain, one quadrangular and the other cylindrical, particularly interesting for its characteristic crown of brackets. The defensive system, other than the external walls, was also originally composed of a series of internal buildings about 20 metres tall and by a circle of internal walls.
