Mount Kronio Natural Reserve and Antiquarium
Natural area
Sciacca (AG)
Mount Kronio, also known as Mount Saint Calogero after the saint who lived and died in a cave on the mount and the sanctuary built there in his name, is the highest part of the Sciacca territory. A nature reserve extends over the Mount, characterised by a pine forest and some strips of rocky vegetation, while its peak is home to birds of prey such as the kestrel and the rare Bonelli’s eagle. The unique characteristic of this mount is tied to the presence of vaporous phenomena that, rising along the network of tunnels that pass through it, leak from the higher karst caves, incorporated in the modern structure of the thermal springs. The top floor of the thermal complex houses a small Antiquarium, in which archaeological materials from both pre-historic and historic times are displayed. These pieces were taken from excavations and research carried out last century inside the underground complex of karst origins that has developed under the surface of the Mount.
