Saint Calogero Cathedral
Basilica
Sciacca (AG)
The Cathedral of Saint Calogero, situated on the summit of Mount Kronio, is a sanctuary dedicated to the hermit monk Saint Calogero who, during the Byzanrine era, took refuge in Sciacca, living as a hermit in a cave on Mount Kronio. Every year, on the 18th of August, a festival is celebrated in his honour.
The monk’s cave was used as a small church after his death and it is precisely above this that, in the XVI century, the current Cathedral, which later underwent further restoration, was built.
On the left, you can see the bell tower built in 1923 by A. Sorrentino. Interesting works such as the “Baptism of Jesus” by Father Marelli, “Saint Girolamo” by Mariano Rossi, “Saint Zasimo offering communion to Saint Maria Egiziaca” by Gaspare Testone and a XVII century reliquary crucifix by an unknown artist, are all displayed inside the church. On the main altar stands the statue of Saint Calogero, sculpted in around 1535 by Antonello Gagini and son Giacomo, while the nave vault was frescoed by Lo Bello and Vitabile.
