Frederick the Second's Castle
Castle
Giuliana (PA)
The castle was part of a set of fortresses spread across southern Italy and in Sicily.
It constitutes a great fort set on the rock summit and a semi-circular building that corresponds to the former Olivetan monastery located lower down. The two elements form an obtuse angle above which nestles a pentagonal based tower. On the south side of the castle lies the rocky overhang of the Malotempo river valley. The walls are around two metres thick. From the rectangular atrium you can access the main lounge that leads to other rooms, which are all characterised by pointed-arch vaults.
The terraces are accessed by an artificially constructed stairway extracted from the thick wall on the right of the atrium.
Thanks to the restoration, completed at the beginning of 2006, the castle has been reopened for public use.
