Ova Murina

Local Food Product

Like the Cucchitelle the Ova Murina is a typical sweet created by the “saintly hands” of the nuns of Sciacca. A soft, cylindrical dessert stuffed with cream and chocolate and almond pieces. It is also known as the “summer cannolo”, seeing as ricotta is not produced during the hot period, the space is instead filled with cream. As far as the origin of the name is concerned there are two schools of thought: one translates the name into “uova Moresche” (Moorish eggs), since cinnamon, vanilla and other ingredients needed to prepare the dessert were introduced by the Moors; whereas the other associates the name with its resemblance to the flesh of the moray fish, “murena”, with its dark exterior and white interior.
