The artistic pride and joy of Sciacca is in its production of artisan ceramic pottery, which has been certified ‘Protected Denomination of Origin’ (P.D.O). Varies types of majolica (plates, vases, urns, statues, tiles, etc.), brightly coloured in yellow, green and cobalt blue, are beautifully exhibited in the numerous ceramic workshops around the historic centre. Recently discovered ancient kilns suggest that the art of pottery started as early as the fourteenth century. In the sixteenth century many tiles from Sciacca were used to embellish various monuments such as the Cathedral of Monreale and the former Church of Saint Margherita.
