Church of the Holy Trinity of Delia
Churches
Castelvetrano (TP)
A small Norman church built during the first half of the XII century and modelled on the Byzantine “Cuba”. It features three notable pronounced apses that run alongside the east side, linking perfectly to the three entrance doors. The two lateral doors were strictly reserved for men while the one in the centre for women who, in complete respect for the Greek custom, took part in the celebration from a reserved area of the church. From the centre of the structure a raised pointed dome surges resting on a square tambour. The structure has the shape of a cross, where the arms are barrel vaulted and the angular intersections are closed by a cross vault. The Greek cross structure is repeated in the crypt, accessed by way of an external staircase, which is located on the east side. It was rediscovered and restored by Giuseppe Patricolo in 1880.
